The Pilgrims’ Path and the Mayflower
Nearly 400 years ago, the Pilgrims left England. They sailed on a ship called the Mayflower. The ship sailed across the Atlantic Ocean and carried about a hundred people who had a plan. These men, women, and children were looking for a place where they could worship as they wanted. They would land in Virginia. The people were known as the Pilgrims.
The trip took more than two months. The weather was bad. The winds were strong. The inside of the Mayflower was dark and wet. There were no windows. The ceiling was very low. Some people got sick.
The Mayflower finally reached land. The ship did not end up in Virginia; it landed far north of Virginia in what is now Massachusetts. The Pilgrims called this place Plymouth. The Pilgrims stayed in Plymouth. Pilgrim men built houses. They planted crops for food to eat. Soon, the Pilgrims had new homes in North America. They made it their new home.
